Philabundance

In 1984, Philabundance was founded by an idealist named Pamela Rainey Lawler who saw perfectly good food going to waste, and at the same time, saw people going hungry. Pam launched her initiative to bridge the gap between that surplus of food and neighbors in our communities struggling with food insecurity. What started out as a small food rescue organization operating out of her Subaru, 35+ years later, is an innovative, impactful and collaborative organization distributing more than 50 million pounds of food a year to those in need of emergency food services. Philabundance is a proud member of Feeding America, a nationwide network of food banks leading the fight against hunger in the United States.

Share Food Program started in 1986 as a food co-op for communities in need of access to low-cost food in Philadelphia. Since 1991 we have been a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to getting food to our vulnerable neighbors in need throughout the City, and beyond its borders in surrounding townships and counties throughout the Greater Philadelphia region.

Share Food Program is now the leading hunger relief organization in our region, and one of the largest independent food banks in the nation.

Since 1996, the Mitzvah Food Program has served thousands of food insecure individuals and families in Greater Philadelphia. Operating out of four pantry sites in Old York Road, Main Line, Bucks County, and Northeast, recipients can select their own fresh, frozen, and nonperishable food with kosher options through a points system that incentivizes healthier eating.

South Philadelphia Community Fridge

We're a community-centered, volunteer-based organization dedicated to giving all Philadelphians access to fresh and healthy food, combatting food insecurity and inequality in our city through mutual aid. Studies show that nearly 1 in 5 Philadelphia families struggle with hunger, and food pantries' demand for fresh produce has increased 3x since 2019. We partner with local grocers and restaurants to stock this fridge with perfectly good produce, pantry staples, and prepared foods that would otherwise be thrown out.

Katie's Cupboard

Today, Tabor’s worship community is a rich blend of people of European, African, Latin and Asian descent. We remain deeply rooted in Lutheran theology, convinced that the grace of God is given to us through hearing the gospel proclaimed and receiving the sacraments of baptism and communion.

Tabor is committed to serving our neighbors in the Feltonville section of Philadelphia. In September of 2019 we opened a food pantry called Katie’s Cupboard. This program has expanded rapidly through the pandemic and now serves an average of about 180-200 households per week.

North 10 Philadelphia

The 10th Street Community Market was created to meet the needs of our community, as 66% of residents identified food access as a long-term problem in a strategic plan facilitated by North10. Our goal is to address this inequity by increasing access to food in an underserved community. We aim to provide a clean, welcoming space with trained staff, an inventory that reflects community needs, and a choice format that respects each individual’s dignity.

Rita Ungaro-Schiavone started Aid for Friends in her home in 1974. Rita, who began a food program at the Archdiocese, encountered many neighbors in need and was determined that no one be hungry or alone in a world of caring people. While volunteering at the YWCA, she saw a need for food AND friendship and began delivering homecooked meals to homebound people. Fifty years and one name change later, Caring for Friends has expanded to a network of 10,000 volunteers & 200 food pantries providing food and friendship in 5 counties.

Cherry Hill Food Pantry

Our mission is dedicated to supplying groceries and related social services to needy families and individuals in Cherry Hill and the surrounding communities. At a series of afternoon meetings interested congregants from area churches came together to discuss how they as a team, rather than as individual congregations, could best address one or more social issues facing the Cherry Hill community. The issue of hunger, or food insecurity, was a natural focus. Many individuals, families and seniors struggle to meet their bills. When faced with an unexpected expense, or worse, the loss of income, these individuals often turn to churches in the area for assistance with food, bills, and access to social services.

The Simple Way

We are a small organization supporting neighbors in building a neighborhood where we all belong and thrive. We find ways to celebrate together. We garden and work to make our neighborhood beautiful. We collaborate locally in practical ways, like working for food security and connecting people with nearby resources. When we run into bigger systems that throw obstacles in our neighbors’ way, we advocate for systemic change together. Ultimately, we envision all of our neighbors coming to a place of security that enables growth and flourishing.

Lemontree

Lemontree started in June 2020 with a simple idea: no one should go hungry. When we learned that most people facing food insecurity don’t take the free food in their own neighborhood, we jumped into action. We build alongside the people we serve and the partners who power the local safety net—from neighborhood pantries to national orgs. Everything we do is grounded in our belief that empathy, empowered by technology, can change the world.

Friend's Fridge

The Friends' Fridge is a place for Friends to gather, get what they need, and give what they can. We believe access to healthy food is a human right and the Friends' Fridge is one door to open and make that happen! St. James School and William Penn Charter School have been Friends for a long time! The latest collaboration together is the Friends' Fridge for the Allegheny West and Nicetown-Tioga neighborhoods of Philadelphia. Penn Charter's Class of 2033 worked with Mt. Airy Presbyterian Church on a Food Justice study during their 2nd grade year and it led them to collaborating with St.James school to create.

Helping Hand Rescue Mission

On Sunday afternoons, we invite women and men in to share the afternoon with us at the Helping Hand Rescue Mission. At 1:45 pm we begin our Mission Church where our community sings, reads, tells stories, and hears their names called for many good things. We follow with a home-cooked meal. We treat others as we want to be treated. And we like dessert, so we serve dessert.
